Vaccine hesitancy: Healthcare workers still face stiff resistance in many rural areas of Karnataka | Bengaluru News – Times of India

While the Covid-19 inoculation drive is in full swing, healthcare workers are still having to deal with vaccine hesitancy, especially in rural areas.
Two videos, which were widely shared on social media, show two women — in separate incidents in Ballari and Vijayanagar districts on Thursday — being forcefully given the shot after efforts from villagers, ASHA workers and nurses to convince them to take the shot failed.
The reluctant women refused to go anywhere near the medical team while they resisted the jab. Health workers say while some fear side effects of the vaccine, others have needle phobia.
The healthcare team was going door-to-door in Mariyammanahalli, Vijayanagar district to administer the shot. The woman refused and the video shows him crying and hugging ASHA workers. The team spent an hour trying to talk her into taking the shot. When they failed, the video shows friends of the woman holding her down while they administered the dose.
In a similar incident in Raravi village, Shiraguppa taluk in Ballari district, an elderly woman refused to take the shot due to a fear of the needle.
Villagers tried convincing the woman, but she refused. Finally, two villagers held her down, and health workers administered the jab even while she kicked and screamed.
“There is stiff resistance to the shot in some rural areas. Such cases take a lot of our time,” said a health worker.
